What are the Best Benchtops for a Kitchen in NZ?

Modern kitchen design with a warm timber island, vertical slatted joinery, clean white cabinetry, and minimalist finishes.

What are the Best Benchtops for a Kitchen in NZ?

If you're planning a kitchen renovation in Ashburton or Central Otago, one of the biggest decisions you’ll make is your benchtop.

So let’s answer the question directly:

What are the best benchtops for a kitchen in NZ?

There isn’t one single “best” benchtop. The right choice depends on how you use your kitchen, your budget, and how long you plan to stay in your home.
For busy family homes, durability and low maintenance matter most.

For rentals, practicality and value are key.
For high-end builds, finish and long-term performance take priority.

After more than 20 years installing kitchens across Ashburton, Alexandra, Cromwell, Wanaka and Queenstown/Frankton, we’ve found that choosing the right material - and installing it properly - makes all the difference.

What Benchtop Materials Are Most Popular in New Zealand?

In NZ homes, the most common kitchen bench materials are:
• Laminate
• Engineered stone
• Porcelain
• Timber
• Stainless steel
Each has its place. The “best” option depends on your lifestyle and the level of finish you’re after.

Is Laminate Still a Good Option for a Kitchen Bench?

Yes - and it’s better than many people think.

Modern laminate benchtop options are durable, cost-effective, and available in finishes that closely resemble stone or timber.

For rental properties and investment homes in Ashburton and surrounding rural areas, laminate is often a smart choice because:

• It’s affordable without looking dated
• It’s easy to replace if damaged
• It handles everyday wear well

That said, the quality of installation matters. Poor edging or incorrect sealing can cause swelling over time.

If getting a square edge profile ask for ABS Edging. This creates a 1mm PVC edge that is chip resistant and extends the lifetime of the benchtop for a minimal variation in cost.
Beware of cheaper laminate benchtops suppliers when any site joins are required onsite. The flatness of the mdf substrate is what really matters here. If the benchtop substrate is bowed which is common with cheaper suppliers, this will create “cupping” at the site joins resulting in an uneven join.

Our preferred laminate suppliers known for their quality and great service are Hollings Laminates in Ashburton and Freeform Laminates & Stone in Christchurch.

Are Engineered Stone Benchtops Worth It?

Engineered stone has been one of the most popular choices in New Zealand for years.

It offers:

• Strong durability
• A premium look
• Low maintenance
• Excellent resale appeal

For homeowners in Wanaka, Queenstown and lifestyle properties around Mid Canterbury, engineered stone is often chosen for its clean, high-end finish.

However, proper support and installation are critical. We’ve seen issues where cabinetry hasn’t been correctly prepared underneath, leading to stress cracks.

Our preferred suppliers are AGB Stone and Lucino for both price and quality of service.

What About Porcelain, Timber and Stainless Steel?

These materials suit specific homes and styles.

Porcelain Benchtops

• Extremely durable
• Heat and scratch resistant
• Growing in popularity in higher-end builds

Timber Benchtops

• Warm, natural look
• Great as an island feature
• Requires maintenance and proper sealing

Stainless Steel

• Commercial-grade durability
• Easy to clean
• Popular in modern or minimalist designs

Timber in particular must be installed correctly and sealed properly - otherwise movement and moisture can cause long-term problems.

Which Benchtop Is Best for Rental Properties?

For rentals in Ashburton and Central Otago, practicality wins.

A high-quality laminate kitchen bench is often the most sensible option because:

• It keeps costs manageable
• It’s durable for tenants
• It’s easier to repair or replace

That said, some landlords upgrading higher-end rentals are now choosing engineered stone to increase property appeal and rental value.

How Do You Choose the Right Benchtop for Your Home?

Ask yourself:

• Do you cook every night?
• Do you have young children?
• Are you planning to sell in the next few years?
• Is this your forever home?
• What’s your overall kitchen renovation budget?

The best benchtop is the one that suits how you live.

We often customise layouts by adjusting cabinetry or extending the kitchen bench to improve usability. In one recent project, we even built a custom backing for an island bench and added extra shelving to tie the whole space together.

That flexibility is where working with an experienced joiner makes a real difference.

Why Professional Kitchen Installers Matter

The material is only half the equation. Installation determines whether your benchtop lasts 5 years or 20.

A recent client shared this after we installed a kitset kitchen in their new home:
“They were amazing… I live in another city and had to rely on them for confirming measurements, assisting with delivery, and handling any issues. They kept me informed with texts, calls and photos throughout… They even made a custom backing for my island bench and completed extra shelving. Superb service, always helpful, friendly and professional.”

Another client simply said:
“Very accommodating, great results on our kitchen bench top.”
Whether it’s a flat pack kitchen install or a complete kitchen replacement, managing measurements, cabinetry support, and coordination with other trades is critical.

We regularly work with homeowners across:

• Ashburton
• Alexandra
• Cromwell
• Wanaka
• Queenstown / Frankton

Including rural homes and lifestyle blocks where precision matters even more.

So, What Is the Best Benchtops for a Kitchen NZ?

The best benchtop is the one that:

• Matches your lifestyle
